Nelson Yacht Club provides an excellent facility from which Nelson Watersports can operate safe, and enjoyable windsurfing instruction. There is plenty of car parking and good access to the water from the slipway.
If you want to use the carpark and slipway, then we’ll ask for a Day Sailing Fee of $10, which will give you access to the Club facilities for the day.
If you want to use the slipway and the facilities fairly regularly then why not join the club? At $110 for an adult membership, it is exceptionally good value… Plus, you’ll get access to a whole heap of member benefits; discounts off courses and tuition, members prices at “The Penguin’s Nest”, and much more. We’re also hoping to organise some simple racing for windsurfers over the course of the season too!
Ideal wind and tide combinations:
The spot works in anything from southerly to west to north-easterly. However, the most frequent winds are either the sea breeze from the NNE, stormy weather from the NW, or colder post frontal weather from the SW.
You can sail at any state of tide, but the strength of the mid-tide flow is best avoided, especially at Spring/Big Tides.
Haulashore Island can sometimes cause a bit of a wind shadow in a SW.
The main consideration is the abundance of other water users. The main shipping channel for Port Nelson runs out through The Cut and is marked by Lateral Marks (red and green posts). This is best avoided at all times, but whilst shipping movements are happening it becomes a Total Exclusion Zone. Large vessels have no possibility of changing course or stopping, so best to steer well clear!!
