Congratulations to Nelson’s Max Meffan – NZ Youth Slalom Champion 2015

After coming a very close second in the under 17 Techno Nationals, Max had got a taste for racing. A few days in Totoranui on holiday were enough and Max was heading straight back down to Christchurch for the ATF New Zealand Slalom Nationals at Naval Point.

This time he went one better and took out the under 18 national title convincingly, getting 1st place in all but one race. He even won a race in the Silver Fleet… Great work!

Max and Burty smash it at the NZ Techno National Championships at Naval Point YC

max racing at lyttleton editSo… it was perhaps a secret hope, a daren’t even say it out loud suspicion… that two of our junior windsurfers would rock up at the New Zealand National Championships to race in the youth Techno 293 One Design class, and hold their own…

Having never properly raced on windsurfers, Max and Burty Meffan used their Optimist racing experience and their excellent windsurfing skills honed on Tuesday afternoons for the past couple of season to more than hold their own last weekend. In fact, the first day must have been a bit of a shock to the rest of the fleet!

Max (14) was racing in the under 17 age-group and won all three races on the first day. Some more extreme conditions saw him pipped for the national title over the three days by only 2 points. So close! Lots of lessons learned and experience gained, so I wouldn’t bet against him for next year!

Burty (12) was consistently finishing around 4th overall (including the under 17s) and completely dominated the under 15 age group to win the national title.

We now have more than 10 Techno 293s in the region and it would be great to get some regular racing happening here in Nelson.

Congratulations Max and Burty!

Youth Windsurfing sessions will be starting up for the term on Mondays and Tuesday 4-6pm. Contact us for more details!

First Tuesday Social tomorrow!

Tomorrow will see that start of our supervised sailing and windsurfing sessions on Tuesday evenings for the season. Give us a ring to book a board / boat and we’ll look forward to seeing you there at 6ish. As in the previous years,I will be running a youth windsurfing session immediately prior, so please bear with me!

We’ll get someone to fire up the BBQ, so bring along something to throw on and a few $$ to buy drinks from the club bar.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Spring Sou’westers have arrived!

Henry jumping one-handedHere’s a shot from yesterday’s session at Tahunanui Back Beach. Henry getting some nice air and even waving at someone on the beach! At least the breeze was a little more manageable than the 35-47knots of the day before!

The arms are a bit sore today, so I’m glad the wind has abated… just in time for the first lessons of the Spring this afternoon.

Getting ready!

Well it’s been a bit funny getting ready for the summer season, wandering around in shorts in 18 degrees one day, then going skiing the next!

It is an exciting time, with the incorporation of Nelson Watersports Limited, new contracts with Nelson Yacht Club and NBYTRA, Luke coming back and another coach Aaron lined up to coach the college Teams Racing squads.

We’ve got the first sailing courses of the year for Nelson Yacht Club over the school holidays and the official opening of the club is on Saturday 11th October. Come down and see us!

Over the next few weeks we’ll be up and running for windsurfing hire and lessons, and this year we’re branching out into SUP hire and tours too! Launching from the NYC ramp means Haulashore Island is only a short paddle away!

However, there’s 40cm forecast at Rainbow today and tonight and a clearing forecast for tomorrow, so fingers crossed for a good day in the pow!

Well, it’s windy…

The ‘all or nothing’ wind pattern of autumn in Nelson continues today with a wet and wild northely gusting over 40 knots in the harbour. It is the driving rain is keeping me inside at the moment!LeadLightHarbourI wonder what the prediction of a Super El Nino event over next summer will bring us in Nelson. The last super El Nino event was in 1997-98 – anyone remember what that summer was like!?
